Volume C holds the open games - every line beginning 1.e4 e5, chess’s oldest and most exhaustively analyzed body of opening theory, from the Ruy Lopez and Italian Game to the King’s Gambit and Petrov’s Defense - plus the French Defense, grouped here by the classification’s own historical boundary even though the French itself is structurally a semi-open defense like its Volume B neighbors.
