The idea
The 52 named lines mostly split on the center’s fate: the Main Line accepts an eventual central pawn trade for open, active piece play, while the Chebanenko and Schlechter setups keep the tension longer, trading some activity for a harder-to-crack structure - the reputation that’s made the Slav one of Black’s most solid replies to 1.d4.
