The idea

Black checks with the bishop a move before White could even play Nc3, ruling out a genuine Nimzo-Indian pin entirely - White almost always blocks with Bd2 or interposes the knight, and the position usually resolves into simpler, more solid equality rather than the sharper structural imbalances a real Nimzo-Indian pin creates.
