The idea
White builds a King’s Indian Defense-style setup - fianchetto the bishop, castle, expand with e4 or c4 later - with an extra tempo, regardless of what Black actually plays. That makes it less a reply to any one specific defense than a repeatable system White can aim for against almost anything Black tries.
