The idea

White fianchettoes the king’s bishop before touching a single central pawn, keeping every option open for what follows. It’s less a distinct strategic system of its own than a flexible first move that can transpose into a Réti, an English, or a King’s Indian Attack setup depending on how the rest of the game develops.
