The idea

White stakes an early claim on the h1-a8 diagonal and dares Black to punish the weakening pawn move immediately. Mainstream theory considers it largely unsound; it survives mostly as a deliberate way to sidestep known opening theory entirely rather than through any real structural merit of its own.
